joanne murray

A resident of Far Rockaway since 1978. Attended public schools in Brooklyn, NY. Graduated from Girls High School in Brooklyn, where she was a member of the Arista Honor Society, and she was the Salutatorian of the senior class. She attended Brooklyn College for a brief time. She received both an Associate in Arts degree and Bachelor of Arts degree from Pace University in New York City. She was accepted into New York University’s Graduate Program, but she opted to take early retirement from her employment at the telephone company.

 

Her first job was at the New York Telephone Company, and she rose through the ranks, where 99% of the time, she was the only Black person, or person of color, on the various teams. She retired from Bell Atlantic (which was formerly New York Telephone Company, and which is now Verizon) as a manager, overseeing systems programming. She received several awards for her many accomplishments.

Joanne is a widow, the mother of two children, Kenneth and Celeste; grandmother of five, Leandra, Delana, Mekhi, Kevin, and Nia; great-grandmother of Jayla.

 

The list of organizations that she is/was involved with are:  NAACP, Minority Management Association, where she served on the Board of Directors as Secretary, Faith in New York, UPWARD, Director of the Altar Server Society at her church, trainer for Lectors (readers) at her church, Chairperson of the Annual Catholic Appeal for her church, Chairperson of the Vocations Committee for her church.

 

She is an avid reader, she loves to travel, and loves spending quality time with family and friends. She is committed to fight for the rights of Black people and all people of color, and all disenfranchised people.
